Real horses are rarely one flat shade. A bay has a brown body with a black mane, tail and lower legs; a chestnut is reddish all through; a grey is almost white with a darker muzzle. Picking a real coat pattern and following it makes a finished page look far more convincing than colouring the whole animal one tone โ and children who like horses usually enjoy knowing the names.
Manes are worth the effort
The mane is where a horse page comes alive. Work in strands rather than one block: two or three closely related shades, darker at the roots, and leave a few strands nearly white. The same applies to the tail.
The slow ones
The carousel horse and the patterned horse both reward a fine pen and an hour. The carousel page in particular has scrollwork small enough that pencils will struggle.
Printing
Print at 100% scale rather than โfit to pageโ. Letter or A4 to match your paper.
