Big Simple Butterfly coloring page

A page that teaches something

The life-cycle page shows caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly on one sheet. It is the page teachers ask for, and it turns a colouring session into a science lesson without anybody noticing.

Symmetry is the whole trick

Real butterfly wings match left to right. Colouring one wing and then copying it across is more satisfying than it sounds, and it is a genuinely useful exercise for a child learning to plan ahead. Do the left wing first, then work the right to match.

Monarchs, if you want to be accurate

Orange panels, black veins, white dots around the border. The monarch page is drawn with those cells separated so you can follow the real pattern โ€” or ignore it entirely and make it turquoise.

Printing

Print at 100% scale, not โ€œfit to pageโ€. Letter or A4 to match your paper. Cardstock if you plan to cut the butterflies out.
